PhD, Chair, Professor

Dr. Eric Engdahl is the chair of the Department of Teacher Didactics. He teaches standards-based visual and performing arts methods to undergraduates, multiple-subject credential candidates, and masters students in the Early Childhood Education program. His classes cover how to finer integrate visual and performing arts across the curricula. He teaches single discipline methods courses in visual art, social studies, physical education, and music. In addition to didactics at CSUEB, he has taught in the Actor Preparation Programme at Solano College, Wright State Academy, and Florida International University. He works as a consultant and artist in the classroom with many schools in the East Bay.

James Mitchell

PhD, Professor

Dr. James Yard. Mitchell is a professor of Teacher Instruction and has been a member of the CSUEB Teacher Education kinesthesia since 2002. He teaches courses in the Educational Psychology track of the credential program besides every bit Technology in Education and Professional Responsibilities. His research focuses on cooperation and conflict resolution as related to HIV/AIDS education and service learning, as well as autonomous-citizenship skill evolution through cooperation in the classroom. Soon, Dr. Mitchell is part of a seven-person team that is collaborating on a project to teach Social Studies using STEM and other subjects, specifically as such educational activity relates to Ceremonious Rights.

For the 2016-17 academic yr, Dr. Mitchell served as Special Consultant / Interim Area Director - Northern Region, to the CalState TEACH program. From 01/08 through 12/08 Dr. Mitchell chaired the Teacher Education Department. He too has served as Team Leader for the Single Subject Online Team, as well as the Transition-to-Teaching program squad, a partnership with the Alameda Canton Office of Pedagogy, in which classroom paraprofessionals earned their State of California instruction credential. Since 2014, Dr. Mitchell has served every bit a member of the CSUEB Data Technology Advisory Committee.

Dr. Mitchell is also active with AERA (the American Educational Research Association), serving as Chair of the Special Interest Group: Autonomous Citizenship in Education, as well past Plan Chair of the Special Involvement Group, from 2002-to- 2018. A native of Lowell, Massachusetts, Dr. Mitchell is an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He has held season tickets to the Minnesota Vikings since his graduate school days at UMN, and he lives in the East Bay surface area. His daughter is too a college educatee in the CSU system.

Mary Soto

EdD, Assistant Professor

Dr. Mary Soto is an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education. She teaches English Methods, Introduction to Teaching Emergent Bilinguals, and Inclusive Teaching in Unmarried Subject/Multiple Subject Classrooms. Her enquiry focuses on long-term English language Learners and effective strategies for differentiating Language Arts curriculum.

Dr. Soto is a Board Fellow member of the California Council of Instructor Educators. Before coming to CSUEB, Dr. Soto was the Bilingual Education Programme Coordinator at California State University, Chico. Prior to that, she taught high school theater, E.L.D. and English in California, Mexico, and Southward Texas.

In improver to instruction, Dr. Soto enjoys working out at the gym and going for long hikes in the beautiful Bay Expanse. She has two children who attend unproblematic and loftier school in Hayward. Her husband has been a bilingual elementary school teacher for over 25 years.
